Robert Allerton was heir to an industrial fortune at the turn of the 19th century. An artist, art collector and garden designer, Allerton converted his family farm land in Illinois into a magical estate filled with neoclassical statues, European-inspired sprawling gardens, and hedge mazes complete with his own mansion. The land was deeded to the University of Illinois in the 1940s, and now makes a stunning spot to stroll, explore and be transported to a time long ago.
